Welcome

This was the very 'under construction' website for the Brighton and Hove Sports and Social Club.

The club has now ceased trading.

However I intend to keep this page running for now, as there activity happening to try and help save the building from developers and then turn the club into a wonderful community hub.

I also wish to keep the website running to celebrate its history and remember the amazing efforts from those that did all they could to keep it going against the odds.

There could be hope in keeping the building safe from developers, read on from The Friends Of BHSSC...

"The Brighton Trades Labour Club on Lewes Road has closed after 108 years to be sold for development. It could be a brilliant home for all sorts of community activities and events and is too precious to let go without a fight.

We are a group of grassroots events organisers - some of us used to run popular events at the club before it closed and know it has so much potential.

We submitted a nomination to the Council to register the club as an Asset of Community Value and succeeded in preventing its sale to developers until the end of April.

We are now working on a plan to raise funding, grants and a community share offer to transform the club into a non-profit community space fit for the 21st century - THE BRIGHTON SOCIAL!

Pete Long's Pocket Basie @ Swing City

BHSSC, 16 Lewes Road, Brighton

"They're back! Pete Long's Pocket Basie are stalwarts of the swing dancing scene and perform the way it would have been in the heyday of legendary ballrooms like The Savoy and The Apollo, with no amplification. Pete is a charismatic frontman and we can't wait to welcome him and his fellow musicians back to Swing City HQ after their first sell-out visit.

Swing City - Beginners Lindy Hop six week course

Main Hall, 16 Lewes Road, Brighton

This course will run for six Tuesdays starting 16th January. It is suitable for absolute beginners and those who have previously tried Lindy Hop classes but don't yet have the confidence to social dance. You are welcome to repeat the course although the content will be similar, but some people find this really helpful. Your teachers Faye and Simon love the joy of social dancing and can't wait to share their knowledge with you, and will make sure you have a whole lot of fun while learning! Sign up with or without a partner. Roles are not gender specific, anyone can lead or follow, but you will need to stick with your chosen role for the full six weeks. We will rotate partners during each class - it's fun and valuable to learn with different people! However, if you'd rather stick with the same partner throughout, that's fine too, just let us know at the start of class.

PAYMENT/BOOKING Payment in advance: £38 for six classes or £28 student/unwaged Please email swingcitybrighton@gmail.com to book, letting us know your full name and pronouns, if you're booking as a lead or follow, and whether you're at the regular or concession rate. We will then send you a payment link. NOTE: The Swing City team are taking a break for the festivities and will be taking bookings from 2nd January when we will get back to our emails and admin! BE AWARE: Bookings are ONLY made via Swing City. Please ignore any third-party site such as AllEvents which might have cloned our event page without our permission - unfortunately we have no control over them.

WHAT IS LINDY HOP? Lindy Hop is a Black American dance that evolved in the New York district of Harlem from the late 1920s alongside the development of jazz music. Its heyday was the Swing era of the 1930s and 40s and at its centre was the magnificent Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, home to the famous Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. We are incredibly fortunate to be dancing Lindy Hop today thanks to some of the original Lindy Hoppers including Norma Miller and Frankie Manning who passed on their knowledge to younger generations.
